Priscilla Shirer is emphasizing the importance of our inherent ability to connect with God.

“The most succinct and comprehensive verse in the Bible about hearing God is John 10:27,” she shared with TBN. “Jesus states, ‘My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.’ He’s saying, ‘You need to be my sheep to hear my voice.’ So for new Christians – that relationship is the key that grants you access to God’s voice.”

Shirer elaborated that “the initial step” in this relationship is “truly believing that, as an adopted child brought into God’s family, you inherently have the ability to hear God’s voice. The Holy Spirit is the facilitator.”

She referenced Ephesians 1:

11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

“Now, you can tap into divine channels. You didn’t create them – they were always there. God is communicating,” Shirer explained. “He wants to reveal Himself. Now you have the chance to hear Him.”

She stressed that the first step is “to believe that, as a privilege of being a son or daughter, you can hear from God.”

“It’s the enemy’s deception to make us think we need a theology degree or some special, direct line to God, like someone we might look up to. That we, as ordinary people, can’t hear from God,” Shirer clarified. “That’s what the enemy wants you to believe. He doesn’t want you to know it’s your birthright, so believing that you can is the first step to hearing God.”

In a piece for Relevant Magazine, Shirer reminded readers of the significance of depending on God in all aspects of life.

“When something is troubling us or causing anxiety, we should never hesitate to bring it to our heavenly Father just because we think He’s too busy for something seemingly insignificant,” she wrote. “He has invited us to do that. And I believe His desire for a relationship with us is, at least partly, why He’s done so.”

Shirer added, “Asking things of God doesn’t make us demanding, according to the Bible. Of course, it also doesn’t mean He’ll grant every request. But when we accept His invitation to ask for what we need – both significant and small – one of the greatest gifts He gives us is the opportunity to recognize exactly where our help is coming from. When we make requests and He responds, we are able to know without doubt that He was the One working in our situation.”
