Universal’s animated feature THE WILD ROBOT has emerged as a major box office success, continuing the studio’s strong track record in this genre.

The film opened with an impressive $35 million in its first week and has since accumulated $111 million domestically and $232 million globally after a month in theaters, according to recent reports from Variety.

Universal describes the movie as “an epic adventure following ROZZUM unit 7134, or ‘Roz’, a robot stranded on an uninhabited island. Roz must adapt to the challenging environment, gradually forming bonds with the island’s animals and becoming an adoptive parent to an orphaned gosling.”

Critics have praised the film’s touching portrayal of maternal affection.

This success follows a string of well-performing animated features from Universal, including PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, MIGRATION, and THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE.

Jim Orr, Universal’s domestic distribution chief, attributes this success to content quality, stating, “It all begins and ends with content. The common thread is these are excellent films.”

Indeed, content is crucial, and these movies have consistently upheld family-friendly values. Both THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE and PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH were recognized with Movieguide® Teddy Bear Awards®.

The 2023 Report to the Entertainment Industry by Movieguide® highlights that “movies with strong Christian, redemptive, moral, biblical, traditional, or conservative principles and values typically perform significantly better at the North American box office compared to those lacking such content.”

Jeff Bock, an analyst at Exhibitor Relations, emphasizes, “It’s about the quality of the product. Universal has consistently delivered excellent animated content for decades. This consistency has earned them a loyal audience that previously only Disney’s Pixar could claim.”

To maintain its box office success, Universal would be wise to continue producing uplifting, family-oriented stories.
