Bodie Thoene, a writer and researcher who worked at John Wayne’s Batjac Productions, recently shared insights into the famous actor’s faith and relationship with Christ. Wayne, affectionately known as Duke to his friends, was a devout Christian according to Thoene.
“Many people inquire about John Wayne’s faith and whether he was a believer in Jesus Christ,” Thoene wrote on September 5th. She confidently affirmed that the answer is yes.
During her time at Batjac Productions, Thoene had the opportunity to read through Wayne’s correspondence with fans who were battling cancer. “In every letter, he spoke about how his strong faith helped him through his own cancer journey,” she revealed.
Thoene also recounted an interview with Lowry McCaslin, a lifelong friend of Wayne’s from their days at USC. McCaslin, the son of a Methodist minister, shared that he and Wayne attended a revival service together where Wayne committed his life to Christ. Following that experience, they held weekly Bible studies in their fraternity house attic.
According to Thoene, Wayne often improvised in his films, incorporating elements of his Christian testimony into dialogues. “He was a compassionate, deeply caring Christian man in his personal life,” Thoene wrote. “He supported orphans in Mexico and helped those in need wherever he encountered them. I knew many individuals who were blessed by his generosity.”
Thoene shared a link to a video featuring Wayne and Dean Martin, describing it as “John Wayne’s public testimony.” In the video, Wayne speaks about teaching his young daughter the Lord’s Prayer and Psalms, emphasizing the importance of faith in his family life.
While acknowledging that Wayne wasn’t perfect, Thoene asserted that he genuinely lived out his faith. She concluded her post by saying, “Yes, we’ll be seeing Duke in heaven. He’s there holding the horses for us.”
Bodie Thoene, along with her husband Brock, is an accomplished author and screenwriter. She has sold over 35 million books, including “The Zion Chronicles” series. The couple also co-wrote and co-executive produced the film “I’M NOT ASHAMED.”
In a previous Familyguide article, Thoene shared her inspiration for the film “I’M NOT ASHAMED,” based on the life of Columbine victim Rachel Joy Scott. She spoke about how Rachel’s faith and writings have touched millions of lives and inspired the creation of a movie that aims to impact both young and old for eternity.
