“Newsboys’ Divine Inspiration: How ‘In God We Trust’ Became the Anthem of God’s Not Dead 5”

The Newsboys have played a crucial role in the GOD’S NOT DEAD film series, and their involvement in the fifth installment is more significant than ever, given the movie’s important message.

“About a year ago, they sent me the script without a title,” bassist Adam Agee shared with Familyguide this week. “It was just GOD’S NOT DEAD, the fifth installment, and they asked if we could write some songs for the movie. They wanted Newsboys to be involved, which was an honor…to partner with the GOD’S NOT DEAD franchise.”

Agee continued, “As I read through the script, I made notes on my phone, thinking about potential song ideas. We were in the process of writing our record, so we brought in our friend Paul Duncan from LA, who’s a great writer, and worked with one of our favorite producers, Colby Wedgeworth, here in Nashville.”

“When we got together to write, I asked the professional writers if they had any ideas. Paul suggested ‘In God We Trust,’ and I laughed because it was the first note I had written in my phone,” Agee explained.

The Newsboys and the writers aimed to explore the core meaning of “In God We Trust.” They concluded that it signifies that God is the only one in whom we can place our faith.

“We can’t put our faith in people, policies, or any kind of government…because we’re all fallible. The only place we can put our faith and trust is in God, and that’s what the song is all about,” Agee elaborated.

Some of the song’s lyrics include:

In God we trust

‘Cause there is power in His name

Age to age, He’s still the same

In God we trust

Jehovah

He is Rapha, He is Jireh

He’s the banner over us

In God we trust

IN GOD WE TRUST marks the fifth GOD’S NOT DEAD movie for which the band has created music. Lead singer Michael Tait is proud of the franchise’s success and believes IN GOD WE TRUST delivers a “timely” message.

“We love being part of something that allows us to be conduits to the unbelieving world,” Tait told Familyguide. “Sharing the gospel through GOD’S NOT DEAD…We’ve done this about two or three times. The first time was in 2013…and there’s a funny story behind that.”

Tait recounted how the band was on a long tour when they first got involved with the franchise. “We were on the fourth show of a four-day weekend in a 42-city tour. It was in Houston. We had no idea the song would become as big as it did,” Tait said, referring to the band’s hit, “God’s Not Dead.”

The Newsboys had little time to prepare for their on-screen roles, arriving on set with their lines not fully memorized.

“We got to the set in Houston, tired and worn out, expecting a quick, small production…to do our lines for what we thought would be some low-budget movie,” Tait said. “But it was a big deal. We underestimated and didn’t plan well.”

Despite the initial challenges, “the producers were happy. The director was happy, and it ended up being number three in the country. God’s Not Dead, the first one. This time around, we’re much better prepared,” Tait added.

IN GOD WE TRUST is set to hit theaters on September 12.

The Newsboys recently shared on Instagram:

God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust is a film about prayer, perseverance, and standing up for what you believe in — no matter the circumstances. We’re honored that this song is part of that story, and it’s been incredible to work alongside the God’s Not Dead movie team again after so long!

The movie is IN THEATERS starting September 12 & we need YOUR help to keep it on the big screen. Tickets are on sale NOW & buying ahead of time lets theaters know that faith-based films are important! We’ll be seeing it on opening weekend as well… maybe even in a theater near you!
