Al Roker seeks to inspire younger generations.
WEATHER HUNTERS, his upcoming animated program, finds its roots in Roker’s experiences as the TODAY show’s weatherman, and his family.
“There’s an inherent fascination with weather in all of us. It’s a universal experience,” he mentioned. “The timing for WEATHER HUNTERS couldn’t be better, given the dynamic weather events we’re witnessing globally.”
“Our aim is to simplify these complex occurrences, making them understandable for kids,” he shared. “Even with the mystery unraveled, the wonder remains intact.”
WEATHER HUNTERS centers around Lily Hunter, an enthusiastic 8-year-old, along with her family including her dad Al, mom, brother and sister, all sharing a common interest in unraveling the secrets of weather.

For Roker, a catchy theme song was essential to the show.
He recalls, “Courtney, my daughter, had incredibly thick hair that required significant time to braid. During those braiding sessions, we’d joyfully sing along to the theme songs of TALESPIN, DUCKTALES, CHIP ‘N DALE: RESCUE RANGERS⦠we had all the lyrics memorized,” Rocker remembers. “Therefore, a captivating theme song was crucial, serving both as a memorable tune and a representation of WEATHER HUNTERS as a family-oriented program.”
While the characters’ names differ from Roker’s own children, they draw inspiration from his family dynamics. The concept for the show emerged when his children were around the same age as the characters.
“It’s been a long time coming, but patience pays off,” Roker stated. “The show is loosely inspired by my personal experiences.”
“Al Hunter, the character, is a strikingly handsome, bald African Americanāthe resemblance is uncanny!” he joked. “My wife, Deborah Roberts, co-anchors 20/20, and the three children in the show mirror my own kids’ enduring fascination with weather.”
With a 2-year-old granddaughter, Roker anticipates her enjoyment of the show, which he takes great pride in.
“It signifies the convergence of everything that holds significance in my life: family, climate, weather, and animation,” he expressed.
Roker recently showcased the program to families in Arkansas.
“One child even inquired about the formation of firenadoes! I was taken aback, realizing that even at six years old, they’re aware of phenomena I only learned about a decade ago,” Roker recalled. “That’s why I believe WEATHER HUNTERS is timely, empowering kids to understand weather events they encounter online and impress their peers with their knowledge.”
Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President and General Manager at PBS KIDS, commented, “Given the daily impact of weather on our lives, from our activities to our health, we’re delighted to collaborate with Al Roker on this innovative series. WEATHER HUNTERS imparts fundamental scientific principles in an engaging manner, equipping children with the tools to comprehend weather and encouraging them to observe, collect data, and investigate weather patterns in their own locales.”
Roker lends his voice to Al Hunter, Holly Robinson Peete voices the mom, Sheryl Lee Ralph embodies their neighbor, Ms. Joyce, and LeVar Burton takes on the role of grandpa Wallace Reed Hunter, WHRO reported.
The show’s debut on PBS is scheduled for Sept. 8.
