Chris Sanders, the creative mind behind THE WILD ROBOT, is sharing insights into the film’s central themes of compassion and the journey of first-time parenthood.
The movie’s premise revolves around an advanced robot named Roz, who finds herself marooned on an uninhabited island following a shipwreck. To endure the challenging environment, Roz forms bonds with the island’s wildlife and takes on the role of caregiver to an orphaned gosling.
An excerpt from the Familyguide review states:
THE WILD ROBOT is a truly exceptional film that beautifully celebrates maternal love. The character of Roz the robot embodies clear allegorical elements reminiscent of Christ. She imparts lessons of love to the animals and experiences what appears to be death and resurrection. However, her primary characteristic is the evolution from her initially cold, programmed nature to developing a loving heart. When attempts are made to reprogram her, her newfound heart takes precedence, though this is not where the story concludes. While THE WILD ROBOT features numerous animated action sequences, including animals consuming one another for survival, these scenes are not presented in a cruel or disturbingly violent manner. As such, Familyguide recommends THE WILD ROBOT for children aged six and above. Adults, too, will find themselves captivated by this heartwarming tale.
Sanders expressed to Familyguide that the choice of a robotic protagonist allowed for a more impactful delivery of the film’s messages.
“A character like Roz, being a machine, offers a unique opportunity to convey deeply human stories because she’s experiencing so many things for the first time,” he explained. “One aspect of the story I particularly appreciate is Roz’s journey as a first-time mother, complete with her apprehensions.”
Sanders added, “The crux of the story lies in Roz’s need to deviate from her programming to accomplish her goals. I believe this resonates with any parent… There are always surprises and uncertainties, requiring improvisation and accepting that mistakes will happen, but perseverance is key.”
The filmmaker shared that Roz “paves the way through her unwavering kindness. Her persistent helpfulness, coupled with her innocence, gradually transforms the island’s culture.”
THE WILD ROBOT is already garnering praise from critics.
“It’s a heartening, authentic, and slightly melancholic yet incredibly inspiring tale with a powerful message about the strength of community and unity in the face of significant challenges,” reads IndieWire’s review. “Its gorgeous, handcrafted aesthetic enhances its charm, making it a warm, gem-like film that manages to be both nostalgic and progressive.”
THE WILD ROBOT is set to debut in theaters on September 27.
