“Divine Detour: How a Simple Shopping Trip Became a Life-Changing Encounter for New Foster Parents”

A dedicated foster care advocate and mother of four recently shared a heartwarming story about a divine encounter that allowed her and her husband to offer support to a new foster family.

“We were on a date night, 23 miles from home, when we decided to pop into Carter’s to shop for our boys. As we entered, I noticed a woman cradling a newborn. I couldn’t help but compliment the baby’s beauty. To my surprise, the woman confided that they had just received the infant,” recounted Tracy, who manages the @fosterwhileblackfam Instagram account. “My heart went out to the little girl, and I was touched by the woman’s openness with a complete stranger.”

“It’s rare for us to be in that part of town, but we ended up having a meaningful conversation with the couple. I shared about my work and experiences, we exchanged contact information, and offered our support. Much like how many of you have generously supported the children I’ve advocated for, we did the same for this family,” she explained. “We may never cross paths with this couple again, but I’m eternally grateful for this God-orchestrated moment.”

The fosterwhileblackfam Instagram account aims to inspire families to engage with the foster care system and consider adopting children. Tracy and her husband Mik have welcomed three adopted sons into their family, in addition to their biological daughter.

As a woman of color, Tracy particularly encourages the African American community to get involved in foster care, even when it means raising children from different ethnic backgrounds. Two of Tracy and Mik’s sons are Caucasian, and while this has resulted in some insensitive comments and uncomfortable public interactions, they remain grateful for the opportunity to care for these boys.
