Parents, are you aware of Snapchat's concealed "My Eyes Only" photo vault? Child safety expert Officer Gomez cautions that your children might be stashing concerning content within it.
"Within Snapchat lies an integrated, private photo storage feature unknown to many guardians. Known as 'My Eyes Only,' it's crafted to secure images and videos behind a personal identification number (PIN)," Gomez stated in a recent Facebook update, labeling the function "Snapchat's Hidden Vault."
As per Snapchat's official guidance, "My Eyes Only is intended for Snaps you wish to maintain with enhanced privacy! Once you transfer Snaps and Stories from your main Memories section into My Eyes Only, re-accessing them requires inputting your My Eyes Only passcode."

Unfortunately, adolescents often utilize this vault to hoard images and videos related to illicit substances, nudity, parties, and any content they prefer to conceal from their parents.
"Parents bear the responsibility to investigate. By examining this discreet vault, you could potentially safeguard your own child—or even another's," Gomez recommended.
He further provided a sequence of steps to access this particular Snapchat function:
Launch the Snapchat application (distinguished by its yellow icon featuring a white ghost). You will arrive at the primary camera interface (the screen where users capture Snaps).
Select the compact “double card” emblem situated close to the capture button. This action will reveal the Memories screen (housing photos & videos previously saved within Snapchat).
Navigate to the tabs at the top and select “My Eyes Only.” Should a PIN code prompt appear, it signifies an active vault.
If prompted for a PIN, request it from your child.
Typical rationalizations might include:
– “I’ve forgotten the code.”
– “I didn’t even create it.”
(The extent to which you pursue this is at your discretion.)
Upon successful entry, thoroughly examine the stored material. Be aware: this specific vault operates independently from their ephemeral private messages, which present a distinct set of worries.
Snapchat's functionalities warrant serious consideration.
A parent in Ontario, Canada, shared with CBC Canada that his son developed an illicit drug dependency after establishing contact with dealers via Snapchat.
"He struggles to complete a day without drug use," the father commented regarding his 15-year-old.
What started as a cannabis habit has since escalated to psychedelic substances such as LSD.
"It quickly became alarming, transitioning from 'just a bit of weed' to something of that magnitude," the father further noted. "While I can see he's communicated with individuals, the actual messages remain hidden from me."
Understanding functionalities such as the "My Eyes Only" vault serves as a crucial method for parents to contribute to their children's online safety.
