“Shocking Twist: You Won’t Believe Which Adorable Kids’ Shows Are Secretly Ruling Netflix!”

According to recent data, Netflix’s top licensed shows for the initial six months of 2024 are COCOMELON, YOUNG SHELDON, and PEPPA PIG.

As reported by Variety on September 19, children’s content continues to perform exceptionally well on the streaming platform. The preschool favorite COCOMELON, produced by Moonbug Entertainment, secured the top spot with an impressive 124.5 million views. This figure doesn’t include the 34.4 million views garnered by COCOMELON LANE, a Netflix original also produced by Moonbug. Additionally, Moonbug’s LITTLE ANGEL series accumulated 52.4 million views across its five volumes.

PEPPA PIG attracted 117.4 million views for its six seasons, while YOUNG SHELDON followed closely with 106 million views. SUITS also performed admirably, achieving 81.2 million views across its nine seasons.

Other notable licensed shows on Netflix included reruns of THE WALKING DEAD (47.1 million views) and BREAKING BAD (38 million views). DEXTER from Showtime and SEX AND THE CITY from HBO also ranked highly, with 33.2 million and 33.1 million views respectively.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos commented on the platform’s ability to revive shows, stating, “We have a proven track record of helping launch some of TV’s biggest hits, such as BREAKING BAD and WALKING DEAD. Our recommendation system and reach allow us to resurrect shows like SUITS, turning them into significant pop-culture moments while providing billions of hours of enjoyment for our subscribers.”

In 2023, Sarandos announced that Netflix would actively pursue licensed content. However, in April 2024, it was revealed that the company planned to allocate most of its $17 billion budget to original content production.

It’s worth noting that Netflix’s licensing rights for TV shows and movies vary globally. For instance, BIG BANG THEORY is unavailable on Netflix in the U.S., while HBO shows like SEX AND THE CITY are accessible in the U.S., Latin America, and select European and Asia-Pacific countries. Some content, like TOP GUN: MAVERICK, is available for limited periods in specific regions.

Among Netflix’s most-watched movies for the first half of 2024, three were licensed family films: THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, MINIONS, and THE BOSS BABY.

While the children’s and family genre remains popular, parents should exercise caution as not all content is entirely wholesome. Even seemingly gentle preschool shows like PEPPA PIG have faced controversy.

Familyguide previously reported on PEPPA PIG’s introduction of same-sex characters:

PEPPA PIG recently joined the trend of including LGBTQ+ representation in children’s programming, with GLAAD and others praising the introduction of same-sex characters in a recent episode.

The episode features Penny Polar Bear describing her family, stating, “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mommy and my other mommy. One mommy is a doctor and one mommy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”
