Juggling a professional football career and fatherhood is no small feat. However, since Nick Foles hung up his cleats, he’s been able to dedicate more time to his family.
The former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback recently shared his thoughts on parenting and discipline during an interview on the Sports Spectrum podcast with host Jason Romano.
“Do my kids always get what they want? Certainly not. Do I have to discipline them? Yes, and I do it out of love,” Foles explained. “Our daughter is generally well-behaved, so I rarely need to discipline her. When I do, it’s impactful because it’s uncommon. Our boys, on the other hand, give me plenty of reasons to discipline them daily.”
“I’ve come to realize that one of life’s greatest challenges is understanding why things happen. Why did this occur? Why am I facing this setback? Why am I not progressing in my career?” he continued. “Then I consider my role as a father. Our Heavenly Father loves us more than I could ever love my children. I can’t give my kids everything they desire – that wouldn’t be right. They’d grow up entitled and unprepared for life’s realities.”
“So when our Heavenly Father does this, He’s teaching us something,” Foles concluded. “He’s allowing us to grow and realize that material success isn’t the goal. It’s about our faith. I aim to discipline our children lovingly so they grow up understanding life’s important values. My hope is that one day they’ll choose to follow Christ on their own, as that’s not a decision I can make for them.”
Familyguide recently covered Foles’ retirement from the NFL:
“I want to express my gratitude to my parents. You instilled in me a work ethic that carried me to the NFL,” he stated in his retirement video. “Your character and hard work set an example for me to follow.”
Foles also thanked God for the opportunity to play professional football at such a high level.
“I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing me to live out my childhood dream,” Foles said. “My faith has grown tremendously during this time.”
“As I step away from football, I want to encourage the next generation of NFL players. Give it your all every single day. As this chapter ends, a new one begins. I’m truly thankful for my time in the NFL,” he added.
Foles has also been focusing on his clothing brand, DAD SZN, which he co-founded with NFL punter Pat O’Donnell.
Their mission? “To create a community for fathers to connect, share experiences, and support each other in their parenting journey.”
“I’m really passionate about this because I’m a father myself,” he shared on the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast. “I’m lucky to have an amazing father who challenged me and has always been there for me.”
“The message is about dad season, about fatherhood and being present with your children. But many dads are working and can’t always be around, yet they still love their kids deeply,” Foles added. “There are many different ways to be a dad.”
