“5 Shocking Ways Godly Mentors Can Transform Your Child’s Future”

During a recent episode of her podcast, actress Candace Cameron Bure engaged in a conversation with Dr. Josh and Christi Straub about the crucial role of godly mentors in children’s lives.

“As parents, it’s vital to surround ourselves and our children with other families and adults who can speak truth into their lives,” Dr. Josh explained. “We often repeat the same things to our kids, and it seems to go in one ear and out the other. But when another trusted adult says the exact same thing, suddenly our children listen and act like it’s brand new information.”

Christi shared a valuable insight about influence in a child’s life that she had learned early on. “Picture a five-frame photo frame. Who are the five other key influences in your child’s life? It’s important to pray for those five mentors because their impact can be immense.”

She went on to describe how a mentor in high school significantly shaped her own life. “I had a youth leader who led a Bible study, and I can confidently say that I am who I am today partly because of her influence. She gave me the courage to leave home for university, which was a big step for me.”

Bure shared a heartwarming anecdote about her late FULL HOUSE co-star, Bob Saget, and how he influenced her life from a young age. “Bob was incredibly tall, and I was just a small 10-year-old. He knelt down to my level, introduced himself, and immediately made me feel comfortable. From that first moment, he became my friend.”

Following Saget’s passing in 2022, Bure reflected on their relationship: “You taught me to feel deeply at such a young age. You were never afraid to share your emotions openly. We’ve been deeply connected since the day we met when I was 10 years old. You were like a father and one of my closest friends in life.”

The importance of carefully choosing who we allow into our children’s lives cannot be overstated. As Ephesians 6:4 instructs, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.”

As parents, it is our responsibility to facilitate the instruction our children receive, whether from us or others, and to ensure there are godly mentors and leaders present in their lives.

Candace Cameron Bure recently invited Dr. Josh and Christi Straub onto her podcast to discuss how parents can create a positive atmosphere in their homes.

“I always emphasize the importance of fighting for peace in your home,” Dr. Josh stated. “You have to actively pursue peace; it requires prayer and effort because the world often brings chaos. We need to be mindful of our home’s atmosphere and identify ways to ensure it remains a peaceful haven.”

For families seeking more tranquility, Dr. Josh advises parents to pinpoint areas needing improvement and develop strategies to address them.

“It could be exhaustion, anger, complaining, or fear. Identify the dominant negative spirit in your home that’s affecting everyone, and then consider what small changes you can implement to start shifting the atmosphere in a positive direction.”
